This English translation of Bohumil Hrabal's early prose comes from the first volume of his collected works, titled Křehký dluh. These existentially oriented, experimental texts introduce some of the important figures in his writing for the first time, including Uncle Pepin, who is also presented as the co-author of one of the stories. Why I Write? gives English-speaking readers an opportunity to discover the sources of Hrabal's poetics and understand why Josef Škvorecký rightfully called him “a major lyrical poet” of Czech literature.
