This textbook provides dentistry students with current and essential information on the broad field of social medicine and public health. It is useful not only for medical students but also for students of other humanities-oriented university programmes. Readers will find basic information about the healthcare system, the position and role of primary care, questions of health and illness, the social determinants of health, health policy and health literacy. Further chapters address statistics, biostatistics, demography, the study of the population’s health status, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and the health information system. Social medicine also includes medical assessment, and a chapter on assessment activities discusses the work of the medical assessment service in relation to dentistry. The book also includes chapters on old age and ageing. The text concludes with a brief introduction to the history of dentistry. Its aim is to highlight the value of health and the need to develop people’s ability to protect, maintain and improve their health, of which oral health is an inseparable part.
