The Battle of Courtrai, fought in 1302 between the Flemish army and the forces of the French king Philip the Fair, became a key element of first Belgian and later specifically Flemish national memory in the 19th century, and it remains significant today. Its unusual character fascinated contemporaries as well, since an untrained infantry army utterly defeated the renowned French knights. French historian Xavier Hélary guides readers in a highly scholarly yet engaging manner through the broader historical context of Franco-Flemish relations at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. He considers the role of national identity both in the events themselves and in their later interpretations, examines various chronicle accounts, and uses them to show how a modern historian can approach and write the history of a single battle.
