Descripción

This autobiographical Czech-language prose work takes its title from the opening line of Dante’s Inferno, creating from the outset a bitter contrast with Czechoslovak reality in the 1950s. Josef Jedlička offers a testimony from the Stalinist era through sharp observations of its tragicomic world. Episodes from everyday life and historical upheavals gradually form a distinctive collage in which different periods and perspectives overlap: contemporary records such as Klement Gottwald’s appearance in Prague’s Old Town Square coexist with fragments from the author’s life, including his move to Litvínov and life in a collective housing building, as well as meditative reflections. Its poetic language combines harsh, immediate realism with literary reminiscences and associations, transforming lasting connections and relationships while opening space for free associations and individual irony. The result is a philosophical reflection shaped by literary traditions from earlier decades.
