Descripción

This Czech-language book contains three lectures delivered by French linguist, philosopher, ethnologist and anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss during his fourth visit to Japan, in Tokyo in spring 1986. It revisits several concepts associated with his earlier books, including the distinction between “cold” and “hot” societies, the basic principles of the structural analysis of myth and reflections on race. Its central and recurring theme is what anthropological research, conventionally focused mainly on non-European, non-literate societies, can contribute to questions facing Western civilisation. Lévi-Strauss considers assisted reproduction, economic development and racism, showing that the study of so-called “primitive” societies may offer not only answers to these problems but also valuable contributions to thinking about them. Respect for communities and peoples still often regarded as backward, and for cultural diversity, runs throughout this later work and characterises Lévi-Strauss’s writing as a whole.
