Descripción

This highly readable two-volume work presents an interpretation of European history that remains unusual in the Czech context, viewing it as the history of shared values and attitudes. Instead of focusing on a sequence of events, it introduces readers to the history of people who shared the same fate and experienced the same situations and events for more than 2,000 years, creating a common past. The first volume, Myths and Foundations, begins by seeking archetypes in the mythology and history of the three historical sources of European civilization—Greek, Roman, and Jewish—and ends in the fifteenth century. The second volume, From Renaissance to Renaissance?, begins with humanism, the Renaissance, and the Wars of Religion, and ends with Europe’s rebirth after 1989. The two-volume work is written primarily by French historians from Paul Valéry University in Montpellier. Its structure, content, and style reflect the influence of the Annales school of history. The contents are in Czech.
