The first credible report concerning the Czech state dates to 895 and involves a journey: that of the Czech ruler Spytihněv I from Prague to Regensburg. Over the following millennium, Czech monarchs made hundreds of journeys. The forced voyage of the last Czech monarch, Karel, to the island of Madeira in 1921 symbolically brought these journeys to an end.
