When Mark Shillingford comments on a race in which his twin sister Clare, an outstanding and successful jockey, finishes only second, he cannot shake his suspicions. As a professional racing commentator, he knows she should have won. Was the race fixed? Did she lose deliberately, and if so, why? That same evening, Mark shares his doubts with Clare, but after a heated argument she leaves. It is the last time he sees her alive: a few hours later, Clare falls from the balcony of a London hotel. Devastated, Mark begins searching for an explanation and answers to two questions: Why did Clare lose the race, and why did she take her own life? If she really did so herself.
