One of the most popular Czech children's books, this charming story originated in the 1930s. Karel Čapek, who “wrote and experienced it” for children, brought home a dog to his house in Vinohrady, first an Airedale and then Iris, a wire-haired terrier and Dášeňka's mother. Alongside the puppy's life, the book contains other dog stories, including how to photograph a puppy, fairy tales for Dášeňka, and stories about dogs' habits and people. The delightful storytelling and illustrations accompany children throughout their lives, until one day they introduce their own children to the book.
