This scholarly publication, issued for the exhibition held in Langenargen, Budapest and Olomouc between 2009 and 2010, presents the most comprehensive account to date of the life and work of the important Moravian late-Baroque painter Josef Winterhalder the Younger. It examines his wall paintings, altarpieces, preparatory works, oil sketches and drawings. Introductory studies by Tomáš Valeš, Anna Jávor, Miloš Stehlík, Manfred Koller, Bernhard Kleiser and Zora Wörgötter are accompanied by a critical edition of the principal archival sources, including the painter’s surviving correspondence, Winterhalder’s account of artists active in Znojmo and its surroundings, and the first biographies of Josef Winterhalder the Younger, some of which were written during his lifetime under his supervision. The publication seeks to raise new questions about Winterhalder and his work and to provide a foundation for a future comprehensive monograph on Maulbertsch’s “best pupil”, an individual artist who was far more than merely an industrious copyist of Maulbertsch’s designs.
