The English title The Lies That Bind carries several meanings: lies that bind, unite and obligate at the same time. British philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah, who is of partly Ghanaian origin and works at leading American universities, examines racial, ethnic, class, religious, national and cultural identities, their origins, nature and conflicts. Through the stories of people such as Anton Wilhelm Amo, an African orphan who became a leading European philosopher; the Italian Svevo, a writer who changed his citizenship without moving; and his own father, a passionate opponent of colonialism willing to lay down his life for a nation that did not yet exist, he points to the contradictions, ambiguity and instability of collective identities, their unclear boundaries and the myths on which they are based.
