Descripción

This sixth volume of Jakub Deml’s collected works presents one of the shifts in his spiritual and political outlook: the fruits of his involvement with Sokol between 1923 and 1925. His unexpected identification with the Sokol organisation and its ideas makes sense in the context of his disgust with the Catholic world and his Slavic-oriented nationalism, which he shared with Sokol. His temporary commitment to Sokol coincided with a lasting return to his native Tasov, and the connection between the two was more than merely chronological. The volume brings together Sokolská čítanka (1923), a collection of articles for Sokol journals, often based on speeches given at Sokol events; Sestrám (1924), similar articles addressed specifically to women, including female Sokol members and readers of Sokolice; Česno (1924), prose from the same period that is formally non-Sokol but kindred in spirit; Šlépěje IX (1925), documenting Deml’s personal relationships across the Sokol community as well as the first disputes; and Epilegomena, containing shorter Sokol articles omitted from the relevant books. The texts share themes of becoming grounded in a particular region and community, together with ecological concerns. The volume also includes an afterword, an editorial note, translations of all foreign-language passages, explanations of historical and cultural references, a name index, and reproductions of illustrations and covers from the original editions. The contents are in Czech.
