Descripción
This Czech-language book is based on research into the events of 17 November 1939, when, following demonstrations against the German occupation of Bohemia and Moravia connected with the funeral of Jan Opletal, 1,200 Czech university students were deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Drawing on oral history and testimonies from survivors interviewed at home and abroad, the author reconstructs in detail the former students’ years in the camp. He describes the German practices aimed at destroying the Czech intelligentsia and focuses on the students’ feelings, their self-sacrificing conduct and their courage under inhuman conditions.
