Descripción

This Czech-language book by an Islamologist and longtime Middle East correspondent for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung examines the background to the emergence and expansion of the so-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. The analysis places these events in the context of the collapse of statehood in the Arab world and the total failure of its ruling elites. According to the author, the Arab world is experiencing its deepest crisis since the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Most Arab states, ruled by corrupt family clans or authoritarian leaders who present themselves as “democrats” or “nationalists,” have lost all legitimacy in the eyes of their citizens. Islam has therefore remained their citizens’ only common bond and source of identification, while domestic conflicts are turning into religious wars. The author suggests a troubling parallel with the Thirty Years’ War in Europe and concludes that events in the Arab world will affect Europe more profoundly than any other events since the Second World War.
