George Bernard Shaw’s witty comedy of manners both delighted and scandalised its first audiences in 1914. A brilliant reworking of the classical tale of Pygmalion, it presents the phoneticist Henry Higgins, who believes he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, into a duchess at ease in polite society. What he overlooks is that his creation has a mind of her own. The play is also a barbed attack on the British class system and an expression of Shaw’s feminist views. This edition includes an introduction by Nicholas Grene, Shaw’s preface and his sequel, written to answer demands for a more conventionally romantic ending. It also presents the definitive text prepared under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence, with discussion of the play’s language and politics. The Dublin-born Shaw created the persona of GBS, the showman, satirist, critic, wit and dramatist, and remains the only person to have received both the Nobel Prize in Literature and an Oscar.
