Archives conceal unexpected surprises, including this audio recording of a conversation between Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich during one of their meetings in Vienna. Unlike The Last Entr’acte, which captured a meeting from 1974, this recording comes from three years earlier. The two friends meet around a tape recorder in a good mood and with a zest for life, and the topics of their conversation reflect their cheerful outlook. They discuss poetry, fashion and immorality, reflect on youth and old age, and talk about Samuel Beckett and Josef Šíma. Jiří Voskovec tells stories about Broadway. The second archival discovery is a 1977 dialogue between Jiří Voskovec and Czech emigré Eva Klobouková in Montreal. While the Vienna conversation captivates with the way the two kindred spirits connect one idea to another, the second presents Voskovec’s fundamental thoughts on happiness, friendship and life in exile. The conversations are in Czech.
