This recording features Fryderyk Chopin’s two piano concertos, the first genuinely timeless masterpieces of his career. Chopin remained devoted throughout his creative life to his defining artistic love, the piano. Perhaps no composer before him understood the instrument so intimately or drew so much inspiration from its technique and character. Rich ornamentation, imaginative harmonic progressions, refined piano writing, and above all fresh, expressive melodies combined with an ever-present poetic sensitivity make both works jewels of the piano concerto repertoire. The challenge they present is taken up by Czech pianist Jan Simon, whose long experience on major international stages allows Chopin’s music to flow with the ease, naturalness and brilliance of seemingly spontaneous inspiration. The Prague Chamber Philharmonia, conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek, provides a sensitive and finely shaped accompaniment. The recording captures the musical poetry of the Polish Romantic in all its richness, in an interpretation to which Simon is profoundly attuned.
