Coach to Vienna / Kocar do Vidne DVD
Synopsis
In this evocative 1966 film directed by Karel Kachyňa and based on a story by Jan Procházka, "The Coach to Vienna" presents a gripping chamber story set in the final days of World War II. The film centers around a desperate rural woman whose husband was hanged by the Nazis and who is presented with a chance for revenge when fate brings a young soldier into her hands. The drama unfolds during a journey through a dense forest, where a horse-drawn carriage carrying the woman, the soldier, and his severely wounded comrade is heading towards the Austrian border. The woman awaits her opportunity for vengeance, but when the moment arrives, she finds herself unable to kill. The film, featuring Iva Janžurová in the role of the young woman Krista and Jaromír Hanzlík as the soldier, was one of the most controversial of its time, criticized variously as anti-German, anti-Czech, and even anti-partisan. However, it stands primarily as a powerful statement against war and killing, emphasizing the tragic futility of conflict and the moral dilemmas faced by individuals caught in its grasp.
