When the Cat Comes + Az prijde kocour
Jan Werich and Vlastimil Brodský star in this magical tale about what was, what wasn't, and what should be. The legendary Czech film "When the Cat Comes," directed by Vojtěch Jasný in 1963, features Jan Werich in an unforgettable dual role. This modern fairy tale for adults is set in a small town that seems straight out of a storybook. A magician arrives with a beautiful girl named Diana and a magical cat. When the cat's glasses are removed, people are revealed in their true colors based on their character and actions: liars and hypocrites turn purple, thieves turn gray, unfaithful lovers turn yellow, and those in love turn as red as poppies. Naturally, only the latter, and of course the children, are fond of the cat. In the 1960s, Jan Werich had very few acting opportunities, making his performance as both the magician and the narrator in "When the Cat Comes" all the more delightful. He also contributed to the film's dialogues alongside Vojtěch Jasný. The film received several awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1963, Vojtěch Jasný won the Trilobit Award for direction, Jaroslav Kučera for cinematography, and Svatopluk Havelka for music.
