Synopsis
The 1967 Czech bittersweet comedy The Firemen's Ball (Hoří, má panenko) is the third feature film by Miloš Forman, one of the leading representatives of the Czech New Wave. Collaborating with his friends Ivan Passer and Jaroslav Papoušek on the screenplay and with cinematography by the now world-renowned Miroslav Ondříček, the film centers on a very unconventional firemen's ball. Forman delves into the roots of human nature, portraying characters that seem taken directly from real life. While his previous films observed human behavior with a gentle and compassionate smile, The Firemen's Ball eliminates any lyrical tone, offering a thorough exploration of the darker aspects of human nature. The firemen's ball, whose unbelievable proceedings the film follows, serves as a distorted mirror reflecting the social situation of the 1960s.
