Synopsis
In 1930s Prague, a young and beautiful girl boards a crowded tram. Instantly, she catches the eye of a young man, who not only admires her charm but also discreetly attempts to steal her purse. Thus, we are introduced to one of the main characters of the film "Death of the Black King," the swindler, pickpocket, and all-around peculiar character Josef Kořínek, alias Pépí. Alongside him, the story unfolds with other characters from the outskirts of Prague. Naturally, the film also features the jovial councilor Vacátko and his inseparable investigators Brůžek and Bouše. They have the solemn duty of tracking down the murderer of the collector Král, who was found dead and had lost a sum of money on his way back from the bank—a sum that could interest many people in his circle. The film is based on the short story "Father Goriot from Záběhlice" from Jiří Mark's collection Panoptikum hříšných lidí. Alongside the stars of Prague's popular murder mystery series, Jaroslav Marvan, Josef Bláha, and Josef Vinklář, you'll encounter Vlastimil Brodský, Stanislav Fišer, Jana Brejchová, Josef Somr, and Antonie Hegerlíková. You'll also enjoy several "old Prague" songs by Zdeněk Liška and Vladimír Sís interpreted by Věra Nerušilová.
