Synopsis
Losing the war over the Habsburg inheritance, Marie Terezie also seems to be losing the battle for her marriage with František Štěpán. As Bavarians march towards Vienna and Prussians towards Prague, promised Hungarian aid fails to arrive. With dwindling resources and a famine-stricken land, extreme measures are taken by Marie and František. In this second part of the miniseries, Marie Terezie learns to wield her acquired power while feeling the personal toll of her position. Though she manages to avert disaster from Prussian King Frederick II, new threats arise from the French and Bavarians. František's mother returns to Vienna with ulterior motives, aiming to elevate František's position in the family and the empire, even if it means the Habsburgs' defeat. With promised aid from Hungary failing to materialize, Marie, desperate, turns to Baron Trenck for help against protests from her closest confidants. Meanwhile, František Štěpán, a successful merchant, resorts to illicit deals behind Marie's back, sparking marital crisis and infidelity. Can the couple overcome each other's failings?
