Synopsis
Romantic costume dramas are sought after by many viewers, particularly female audiences. In our country, this genre didn't have a strong tradition, mainly due to its considerable financial demands. Nevertheless, during the Protectorate era, three of the most notable films were made – "Night Butterfly," "Masked Mistress," and "The Dancer." They proved that Czech cinematography, even under difficult technical and economic conditions, could produce visually appealing and technically demanding films that provided audiences with two hours of escape from the reality of life in an occupied country. "The Dancer," directed by František Čáp in 1943, tells the story of a woman who, in pursuit of worldwide success, pushes her family life to the background. It inspired the classic of Czech cinematography, Ferdinand Pečenka, to create outstanding images reminiscent of Degas' style. The protagonist and titular character, Clo Maria Glázrová, delivered a remarkable performance with a multitude of psychological nuances. Equally captivating was Karel Höger, who portrayed the dual role of Sasha Holberg and Arens, the girl's lover.
