Granny / Babicka (1940) DVD
Synopsis
The film adaptation of Božena Němcová's classic work, "Babička" (Grandmother), offers a glimpse into life in Old Bělidl. Originally, avant-garde theater director Jiří Frejka considered creating the first film version in 1939. However, due to relentless attacks from the fascist press, he abandoned the project, allowing František Čáp, then just 27 years old, to take over. Čáp meticulously crafted a screenplay inspired by Adolf Kašpar's visual illustrations. Poetic cinematography by Karel Degl beautifully captured the landscapes of Ratibořice and Old Bělidl, meticulously restored by artists Ferdinand Fiala and Jiří Dušek, along with the mill and Viktorčin's flume. Jiří Fiala's music added to the overall atmosphere. The film's greatest strength lay in its acting performances, particularly Terezie Brzková's portrayal of the beautiful, kind, and wise grandmother in only her second film role. Nataša Tanská shone as Barunka, while Světla Svozilová, Marie Glázrová, and Jiřina Štěpničková delivered outstanding performances in their respective roles. The film received tremendous acclaim and continues to captivate audiences with every television broadcast.
