Synopsis
Bitter comedy directed by Ondřej Trojan, Občanský průkaz (English title: Identity Card), based on the novel of the same name by Petr Šabach, follows the lives of four teenage boys, their friends, loves, and parents from the moment they receive their identity cards at the age of fifteen until they try to evade military service at eighteen and attempt to obtain the coveted "blue book." Petr, Aleš, Popelka, and Míťa come of age in the 1970s, a time when going out on the street without an identity card meant asking for trouble, and mandatory military service was the greatest fear for many. Each of them, individually and together, tries not to lose their sanity and sense of humor in a totalitarian state but also not to challenge the regime. They experience a series of episodes, some humorous with a touch of absurd grotesque, others dramatic and fatal. "Občanský průkaz" portrays that peculiar stage of life when childhood gradually transitions into adulthood, and this journey always involves breaking down conformity and parental ideals, rebelling against society, and finding self-respect.
