Synopsis
Danny Smiricky, the protagonist of Josef Skvorecky's stories and novels (including "The Cowards" and "The Swell Season"), undergoes military service from 1953-1954 under the command of Communist Defense Minister Alexej Cepicka. The setting is the Kobylec training camp, where tank training takes place. As a sergeant, Danny Smiricky uses his creative ingenuity to counter the dullness of Communist commanders. Thoughts of civilian life, food, women, and alcohol help him, along with his fellow soldiers, survive the absurdity of "service to the homeland." The film adaptation of Skvorecky's work was directed by Vit Olmer and co-written with Radek John. "Tank Battalion" made history in Czech cinema as the first feature film produced by the private sector since nationalization in 1945. This film, which opened a new chapter for Czech filmmakers, was seen by two million viewers in theaters and became the most-watched film in Czech cinemas in 1991.
