Synopsis
In 1938, Otakar Vávra directed the lavish historical comedy "Cech panen kutnohorských," featuring the adventures of the spirited knight Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov. Zdeněk Štěpánek, who not only played the leading role but also contributed to the concept and script, recalls, "During the shooting of 'Panenství,' Vávra mentioned he was looking for a libretto for a cheerful historical fresco. I remembered the intriguing figure of our famous rogue, fencer, and poet Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov, as famously preserved by Stroupežnický in his plays 'Zvíkovský rarášek' and 'Paní mincmistrová.' I quickly began to gather historical material, especially Dačický's own writings, 'Prostopravda,' and everything related to his life, fate, and era. I found so much that it could have made a thick file. I worked quickly, mainly at night, and soon handed Vávra a script proposal. Vávra was pleased, started writing the technical script, and filming began shortly. The film was very expensive by the standards of the time, and the only way to save was to cut down on studio time, as studios were very costly. Vávra managed to shoot this large-scale film by the standards of the time in a record 19 days…" Mikuláš Dačický of Heslov represented a huge success for Zdeněk Štěpánek, who was in excellent form and played the role brilliantly, winning acclaim from both the public and the critics. Alongside him, a plethora of excellent actors performed, including Ladislav Pešek, Václav Vydra st., Jiřina Šejbalová, František Smolík, Hana Vítová, and Adina Mandlová. The film remains one of the finest works of the 1930s in Czech cinema.
