President Beneš ultimately succumbed to all the pressure, and most lawmakers, including members of democratic parties, endorsed the new order. Action committees, as the main means of 'cleansing' society, proved to be extremely effective, propaganda worked, and the elections at the end of May that year were successfully manipulated. The coup was not complicated by the death of Jan Masaryk, who, despite deeply rooted myths, was willing to cooperate with the Communist Party and, according to some actors, even dreamed of a role as head of state. Yet there was something the communists underestimated: the power gravity of Moscow. It was behind the first lie of the new regime when Klement Gottwald, still as prime minister, publicly rejected the collectivization of agriculture. The hard Soviet line advocating the doctrine of intensifying class struggle was also behind the political processes and especially the militarization of the economy, which pulled Czechoslovakia into a deep economic crisis in the 1950s. As was still true in the 1980s, political relaxation also had to be inspired by the Kremlin. Thus, the turning point came with Stalin's death, coincidentally followed immediately by Gottwald's death.
