During his short life, this native of Kostelec nad Orlicí published four books: the short stories Ovečky na horách (1939) and Všude s námi (1943), and the novels Tvůj bližní (1942) and Tváří k domovu (1944), while other prose works remained scattered in various newspapers and magazines. Lesař's prose was most often compared by contemporary literary critics to writers such as Josef Karel Šlejhar or Jan Čep, both for its melancholic tone and its economical literary expression. The premature death of František Lesař and the social situation after 1948 made it impossible to properly commemorate his unique and timeless literary legacy. The central theme of Lesař's short stories is interpersonal relationships marked by misunderstanding, estrangement, and evil. Their ethical and artistic value arises from the author's persistent, albeit often disappointed, 'faith in humanity.'
