Several declarations of animal rights remain on paper, as the transposition of their main principles into legal form encounters several unresolved questions: the main one being the dispute over the very definition of the bearer of rights. Is it possible to separate the concept of rights from the ability to fulfill duties and bear responsibility for one's actions? Can an animal be considered a person, that is, a subject of law? Chapouthier summarizes possible solutions to these problems in his book - as presented by both advocates and opponents of animal rights.
