Despite growing awareness among doctors of MODY as a distinct and relatively common subtype of diabetes mellitus, up to 90% of patients with MODY remain undiagnosed and are incorrectly classified and treated, most often as having type 1 or type 2 diabetes, for many years. Correct classification occurs much later, on average after as many as 13 years, and some people with MODY may remain permanently hidden under the label of another type of diabetes.
