9788073191078
Daleko od domova (vzpomínky a básně) – Mayerová Gerda (2013)

The author of the slim volume of memoir sketches Prague Winter, but above all a poet whose English-written verses have been published in several collections, was born in Karlovy Vary in 1927 into a Jewish family of merchant Stein. Just before Hitler's occupation of the Sudetenland, the family moved to Prague and unsuccessfully attempted to emigrate from Czechoslovakia. In early 1939, her parents contacted Trevor Chadwick, who, along with Nicholas Winton, organized transports of Jewish children from Prague to London. Since 1939, the author of distinctive poetic reflections and fragments, sometimes burdensome but at other times joyful and happy memories, has lived in England, where in 1949 she married a refugee from Vienna, Adolf Mayer. The Czech selection from her lyrical work, translated by Jitka Herynková, is titled after one of her poems, Far from Home. It is a cross-section of the author's poetic creation, absorbing the Anglophone lyrical tradition as well as the distant echoes of Czech poetry. The verses are supplemented by a translation of the memoirs Prague Winter and also by period photographs of the author and her closest ones from the archive of Gerda Mayer. The book is concluded with an afterword by Sabine Voda Eschgfäller.
