Modern thought anticipates progress while excluding the Christian perspective of creation and the fulfilment of time. From the ancient worldview it adopts the idea of endless movement, while rejecting its circular structure. Modern historical consciousness, with its concept of linear history, is thus a kind of Christian “heresy”. This explains the tendency towards an eschatological view of human progress that has frequently appeared in history and philosophy.
