According to legend, the Israelites came here after the destruction of the legendary Temple in Jerusalem, making it their “Mother Prague,” their city and mother in Israel. From the 16th century, the area was known simply as the Jewish ghetto; in the mid-19th century it became Prague’s fifth district, Josefov, named in honor of Emperor Joseph II, and eventually a refuge for the city’s poor. Confined between the Vltava River and the strictly guarded boundary of Prague’s Old Town, this small area contained only about thirty streets, two squares, one palace, several hundred interconnected houses, synagogues and the still-famous cemetery. It was a cramped place full of mysteries and secrets. Its inhabitants endured prosperity and decline, pogroms, looting by foreign armies, devastating fires, floods and repeated plague epidemics, as well as forced expulsions from the city and the country, yet religious life never ceased. At the end of the 19th century, Prague’s modernization plans demolished the historic, atmospheric and esoteric ghetto, erasing almost all of it and taking an important part of history with it.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"EMINENT - Ing.
