Although the work is short and contains no complex philosophical ideas, its stories fascinated a wide audience. They found their way into theological writings produced during the first centuries of Christianity and into the commentaries of medieval exegetes, strongly influenced several genres of medieval literature, and inspired illuminators to create compelling artistic interpretations.
