The author of the monograph assumes that biblical intertextuality in contemporary German novels does not automatically lead readers to reflect on religious questions, but serves, along with other layers of the novels, its own literary purposes. At the same time, the author is interested in whether and how the biblical source is alienated in the novels. These questions are also answered in relation to older German novels from the mid-20th century, which also utilize biblical intertextuality to characterize their main characters. The monograph describes not only the oldest way of processing the biblical source, the so-called historicizing paraphrase, but also newer approaches such as fictional transfiguration and finally the latest use of biblical intertextuality in novels with transfigurative elements.
