Thanks to fencing, the Czech lands won their very first two Olympic medals in the entire history of the modern games at the London Olympics in 1908 under the flag of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Both were bronze medals, earned by our sabre team. Fencing can generally be divided, excluding Asian martial arts, into sport fencing and historical fencing (staged and theatrical). The foundation for sport fencing was established during the 16th and 17th centuries by the so-called French school, which adopted and refined some elements from the Italian school. Sport fencing is now governed worldwide by the International Fencing Federation, founded in 1913 in Paris by European fencing federations and clubs. One of the nine founders was the Czech fencing club RIEGEL, which has been active in Prague continuously since 1902. The first impulse for the emergence of Czech historical fencing was the demonstrations of sport, historical, and theatrical fencing in September 1960 in the courtyard of the Military Historical Museum at Hradčanské náměstí, organized by fencers from the Czech fencing club RIEGEL.
