Journalists from around the world considered him a fascinating interview subject. In this book, leading German journalist Lutz Hachmeister presents the first comprehensive historical overview of the interviews with the German dictator and asks what lessons can be learned from them. The first extended interviews with the “Bavarian Mussolini” appeared before his attempted coup in 1923. After his subsequent imprisonment in Landsberg, Hitler disappeared from the international spotlight for a time, but after the electoral triumph of the Nazi Party, NSDAP, in 1930, he once again became highly interesting and sought after by the media. Journalists from around the world soon competed for access to Hitler, with meetings arranged by his media adviser, “Putzi” Hanfstaengl. Anglo-American reporters were particularly eager to interview the Nazi leader. For many, an interview with the German dictator was the high point of their careers, and they often failed to recognize the threat posed by his policies. Hachmeister (1959–2024) presents and evaluates these interviews from the perspective of Hitler’s media strategy and the behind-the-scenes relationships between propaganda officials and the media. Drawing on original sources, the book offers a modern view of dictatorship and its media image. He followed the changing relationship between the media and contemporary autocrats until his death.
