It explores how to come to terms with life when born on the eve of the communist coup of 1948 and the horror of the totalitarian 1950s, how to find a relationship with home when one’s mother is a foreigner and one’s father feels like an Austrian of the old monarchy while carrying the stigma of Jewish and bourgeois origins, and how philosophical discussions of good and evil at the family table and the discovery of poetry’s “deadly power” during the political thaw of the 1960s can prepare one to confront the “engineers of human souls”. In conversation, Tomský traces the continuity of his life story from childhood and adolescence in his native region through political exile in England to his cultural work for the social and political renewal of Czech society after November 1989. As a convinced conservative shaped by English pragmatism and devoted to the freedom and traditions of European civilisation, he proclaims uncomfortable truths and calls for the rescue of the world. He recalls his struggle in exile against the communist regime and his many colleagues and collaborators, including Pavel Tigrid, Rio Preisner, Vilém Prečan, Anastáz Opasek, poet Jiří Gruša and English philosopher Roger Scruton. Tomský also returns to the Cold War period, when he founded the Rozmluvy publishing house in London, organised the smuggling of its books and established the literary review of the same name, which featured the best of Czech and Western conservative thought. More than thirty years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, his uncompromising journalism continues to emphasise the meaning of individual and communal life and a common-sense conservatism once again threatened by builders of an old-new utopia of social and economic justice. He argues that no society can be improved without mutual devotion within the national community and moral education towards individual responsibility. Only when life is understood as a gift, the world as a miracle, morning as the beginning of an adventurous journey, and another person as a joyful meeting and an opportunity do ordinary things become extraordinary.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"LEDA spol. s r. o.","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":54024933441883,"sku":"9788073357511","price":20.9,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1787\/2513\/files\/0533575.jpg?v=1789061210","url":"https:\/\/czechmovie.com\/de\/products\/9788073357511","provider":"czechmovie","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
