It is Matejča’s fourth album for Supraphon and marks a change of genre following his recordings of Eugène Ysaÿe’s virtuosic sonatas, chamber music with pianist Jan Schulmeister, and Shostakovich and Prokofiev with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tomáš Netopil. Piazzolla’s musical language combines Argentine tango with contemporary classical music, which he studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, as well as jazz and, unexpectedly for many, the music of Bach, which he played on the bandoneon. His inspirations place him on an imaginary line between Buenos Aires, Paris and New York, a range of influences that may have appealed to Matejča, who plays not only the violin but also piano and percussion, and to the exceptional accordionist Šulc. Their palette of colours brings intimacy in some passages and almost orchestral fullness in others. Their perfect interplay allows both musicians a striking degree of freedom and expressiveness. The two suites, Suite del Ángel and Histoire du Tango, bear the imprint of Piazzolla’s Paris studies, while the album also includes Ave Maria, Oblivion, Escualo and Finale, works that alone would have been enough to secure his immortality.
