Synopsis
Amidst hatred, a love story unfolds... Set in autumn 1944, on the banks of the Elbe near Dresden, a Czech cargo ship loaded with tobacco anchors. Two Czech sailors, Kája Svorník (L. Vaculík) and Bohouš Kotera (A. Procházka), work aboard. With the inspector's tacit approval, they secretly steal rare tobacco, which Bohouš sells on the black market in Prague. However, their main focus is on romantic affairs with German girls, whose names they record in the ship's log. One day, Kája manages to seduce the young Ulrika (M. Hrubešová). Initially keeping his distance from the beautiful redhead and other Germans, he soon realizes he's fallen in love with the innocent girl, just as she has with him. However, wartime circumstances cast a shadow over their relationship: Ulrika is the daughter of a prisoner-of-war camp commander and the fiancée of a Nazi air force commander.
