Description

Build A House, Plant A Tree / Postav dom, zasad strom
Synopsis
Build A House, Plant A Tree" is a film from Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko made in the late 1970s with a strong cast of Czech actors. It tells the story of Matus, a romantic outsider who moves to a remote village in eastern Slovakia with the intention of fulfilling the timeless rural tradition of building a home, planting a tree, digging a well, and fathering a son. However, during the harsh era of normalization, it becomes all too easy to forget that theft is only a temporary means to an end and that love and conscience are the only true foundations for a fulfilling life. The film, which Jakubisko directed without contributing to the screenplay, stands out in his filmography as a unique exploration of the rural Slovak tradition.
