Description

Operation Dunaj / Operace Dunaj DVD
Synopsis
Operation Danube was the code name for the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Among the Polish tanks dispatched to 'liberate' their neighbor from an alleged counter-revolution was an old tank named "Beruška." Departing last from the barracks, it hopelessly loses its way and breaks down at dawn in a remote Czech border village. The villagers make no effort to hide their resentment towards the invaders. However, when both sides realize that they are victims of circumstances and are capable of reaching a humane understanding, various relationships begin to form. There's a need to repair the tank, showcase Czech dumpling cuisine, and perhaps even fall in love. "I'm not interested in ideology, but history from a human perspective. It's a film about understanding," declared debut director Jacek Głomb, who adapted his tragicomic vision from his own 2006 theater production in Polish Legnica. Historical facts link Legnica with the occupation of Czechoslovakia: it served as the Soviet command center for the invasion and was the place where Czech politicians associated with the Prague Spring were detained.
