Synopsis
This synopsis is for a gripping narrative set in the Czech Republic during the summer of 2012, a period shaken by a catastrophic public health crisis. The story revolves around the illegal production and distribution of alcohol tainted with a lethal mixture of ethanol and highly poisonous methanol. This toxic concoction, easily accessible in local shops, as gifts, or even at wedding feasts, leads to the tragic death of at least 38 people and severe poisoning of over 80 others. The potential death toll from the concoction could reach an alarming 158,000. The plot intertwines the lives of diverse characters: Ruda Fulín, working at a windshield wiper fluid company, who faces potential job loss and thus schemes to drastically lower the cost of the alcohol mixture for resale; Iveta, a cleaner with personal struggles, and her mother, both of whom are fond of the alcohol from a nearby stall, finding their troubles seemingly diminishing with each drink; and Captain Hálek, a police officer who values his peace but is assigned to investigate this case, the largest since 1989, with his tough colleague Zakopal. Their urgent mission is to locate the source of the 10,000 liters of poisoned mixture before more lives are lost. This real-life event highlights the dangers lurking in what one might casually drink and the far-reaching impact such a crisis can have on society, connecting police, courts, journalists, politicians, and ordinary citizens.
