8 Heads of Madness / 8 hlav silenstvi DVD
Synopsis
8 Heads of Madness is an unconventional biographical film about the Russian poet Anna Barkova (1901–1976). Set in Soviet Russia in 1921, the film begins with a young Anna on the brink of a stellar career, as her first poetry collection is published. Touted to become the greatest Russian poetess, even eclipsing Pushkin, her life takes a dramatic turn. A few years later, she finds herself cramped in a freight wagon heading to the desolate steppes of Kazakhstan. This journey marks just one of the many she will take to various labor camps. Anna Alexandrovna Barkova spent 22 years of her life in the Soviet Gulag and in exile. The title "8 Heads of Madness refers not only to Barkova's novel of the same name but also to the eight distinct chapters or 'heads' that structure the film. Each chapter, stylistically unique, transports the viewer to different periods of the poetess's life, together weaving a compelling narrative of an exceptionally gifted artist swept along by the tumultuous events of the 20th century in the Soviet Union.
