Hrebejk's new film returns to the time of normalization.

Another highlight of our website is undoubtedly a film by Jan Hřebejk The Teacher.

“MY NAME IS MÁRIA DRAZDECHOVA AND I AM YOUR NEW SCHOOL TEACHER. EVERYONE STANDS UP AND TELLS ME PRETTY LOUD WHERE WORKS MOMMY AND DADDY...”

This sentence is the alpha and omega of the entire film drama. The story is about a seemingly empathetic and very kind teacher, who, however, manipulates with student through their parents. They become literally her personal slaves. Parents worry about the future of their children, as in the days of communism was the teacher very respectable. They provide various services and find her scarce commodity at that time. One family, however, looses their patience and together with the school director tries to overturn operations of this teacher at the school. Everything happens on a conspiratorial meeting where is perfectly portrayed the anxious communist mood full of fear. Do the parents eventually manage to prevail over a person who has pro-Russian connections?

My personal opinion on the film was initially ambivalent, gentlemen Hrebejk and Jarchovský attracted my attention and in the end of the film even left a bitter aftertaste of unrighteousness of that time. The film evokes emotions already from the very beginning, when the viewer is eager to know more and preferably right away. So for me it is a very successful film which is worth to dedicate one night.
