Synopsis
The Emperor's Baker - The Baker's Emperor is a famous two-part historical comedy directed by Martin Frič in 1951, starring Jan Werich in a dual leading role. The narrative transports the viewer to the era of Emperor Rudolf II, a ruler with an unbounded love for alchemy and the arts, alongside characters like the baker Matěj and many others from the imperial court. These characters first appeared twenty years before the film in the play "Golem" by Werich and Voskovec at the Liberated Theatre, which was described as a romantic revue and featured music by Ježek with lyrics by Werich and Voskovec. Unfortunately, none of these songs made it into Frič's film. However, the film does have its evergreen hit, "Ten dělá to a ten zas tohle," composed by Jan Werich and Zdeněk Petr. The costume designs were by the renowned Jiří Trnka, and the film features performances by notable actors such as Marie Vášová, Nataša Gollová, Bohuš Záhorský, Zdeněk Štěpánek, and František Filipovský, with a young red-haired Věra Chytilová appearing in a cameo among the court ladies.
