A classic work of Czech prose from the environment of a Slovak village, first published in 1903-1904. It depicts the customs and realities of the South Moravian countryside and the mentality of its inhabitants at the end of the 19th century, but also the disintegration of the traditional rural community and conservative values. The narrative is set in the cycle of the natural year, beginning with sowing and culminating in harvest. The book, made famous by Miroslav Krobot's dramatisation at the National Theatre in Prague (1993), is published by the Czech Library in two volumes.
