Bohumil Hrabal: Spisy 1 Lyrika (czech)
Synopsis
The first volume of the annotated Writings of Bohumil Hrabal summarises the author's poetry, and those texts that claim this designation even formally. Bohumil Hrabal did not differentiate between poetry and prose; as needed, he converted older poems into prose or rewrote texts written in free verse as prose. Nevertheless, three poetic periods are noticeable in the sequence of his work. The first, juvenile, includes work from 1937-1948. In this phase, these are delicate lyrical transpositions of impressions and images, written in a "neo-poetic" key and influenced by Ungaretti. The second period is related to Hrabal's departure from Nymburk, his work as a sales representative, his brigade in the Kladno steelworks and, above all, the revolutionary period after the 1948 coup. Here, the local poet became an experimental poet, recording a mosaic of images without the need for any synthesis; the lyrical poems became shaky testimonies. The volume is completed by lyrical-epic existentialist prose from 1949-1956: the prose Cain, the collection of short stories The Jewish Candlestick, The Suffering of Old Werther and other texts.
